How do you know if you or your loved one needs therapy?

The fact that you are at this website is probably a good indication that you are at a point where you could use some help. If certain issues have been causing pain and problems in your life and you just aren’t sure how to deal with them, or how to make changes yourself, therapy may be the answer. Does it feel like your issues are growing stronger?  Have you tried to change before but have been unsuccessful?  Are you finding it more and more difficult to cope with things? Are you having more trouble concentrating at school or work?  If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, an experienced therapist may be the help you are looking for.

How do you choose the right therapist?

In order for therapy or counseling to work, it is critical that you or your loved one is comfortable and confident with your therapist.  Therapy will not work unless you have a strong bond with your clinician.  That relationship is so important that …

It has been proven that the number one reason why therapy works is because of the relationship between the client and the therapist!

Here are a few questions you should consider when choosing a therapist:

  • Do you feel you could be honest and open with this therapist?
  • Do you feel relaxed around this person?
  • What does your gut instinct tell you?
  • Can the therapist or counselor clearly define how they can help you?
  • Does the therapist have experience helping others with your particular issue(s)?
  • Do they seem like good listeners?
  • Do you feel like the therapist understands you?
  • How can you pay for therapy—is it covered by insurance?

    At MidWest Center for Personal & Family Development we accept most insurance companies, and we recommend you contact your company and confirm that they cover mental health issues.  We also accept several EAPS, which are Employee Assistance Programs that offer program-paid counseling for their employees. Before you choose a therapist, just do your homework and make sure the provider you choose offers you several way to handle payments.

  • How long will I need to be in therapy?

    It depends on your personal situation – sometimes it just takes a few sessions to address the issue, and other time it may be recommended that you see a therapist/clinician as a longer-term support system; some come weekly and some come 1x per month!  And don’t believe the myth that therapy is forever, although some people occasionally see a therapist throughout their life time, this is the exception. At MidWest Center for Personal & Family Development we will help you create goals and time frames that work for you!

  2. Check to see if your employer has an EAP (Employee Assistance Program)
  3. Go to our Locations and Providers page and first choose a location that works best for you…  You will then see a list of our providers that are available at that location.  You can click on them and check their credentials and pick one.  Then call us to see if they are accepting new clients at this time
